The child known as Sophie Poole was born in Yorkshire, England via a surrogate and raised by her single father Vincent. Diagnosed as autistic at a young age, Sophie was referred to an alternative school and inadvertently garnered the attention of Obsidian, the paramilitary organization that controlled it. Lesser known, Obsidian was an organization created by a council of disgraced military officers and scientists dabbling in unethical scientific research specifically focused on creating soldiers and spies for ongoing wars.The school functioned as a legal means to gather and observe potential research candidates for Dr. Oliver Kendrick's Equilibrium project. When Sophie excelled at all of Dr. Kendrick's screening exams, she became one of several chosen to participate in what he claimed was a case study in new therapy techniques. And she soon became one of very few that survived the initial experiments. Vincent, on the other hand, was quick to realize that something was WRONG about the school and managed to rescue his daughter from the facility.Unfortunately, he didn’t get far.The organization had him falsely accused of murder and then supposedly killed in a altercation with police. With no one standing in their way, Obsidian took the now orphaned child to a more secure facility and proceeded to erase any trace of her from existence. As far as the world was concerned Sophie Poole had never been born at all.Meanwhile, the girl had the majority of her memories suppressed. To keep her compliant, Dr. Kendrick went to great lengths to convince her that Obsidian was the only place where she could be accepted. As the sole surviving subject, she became the focal point of the project.SUBJECT 000 had been found.

For the next several years, Subject 000 lived a harrowing life that consisted of a strict regimen of combat training, education and experimental surgeries and tests. Despite the poorly veiled cruelty of her treatment, Kendrick became increasingly attached to his experiment. He treated her as if she were a stray kitten he had taken in and nurtured, even fondly beginning to refer to her as Kit. And Kit, with limited knowledge of the outside world, did not realize anything was out of the ordinary. There was no better life for her beyond the compound’s walls.After the final surgery, Kendrik finally explained the goal of the Equilibrium project. It was his hope that using nanotechnology they would be able to augment the positive traits related to her autism and create an improved version of would-be super soldiers developed by the U.S. government. Kit quickly recognized certain changes: her brain responded faster - she analyzed situations and conversations in moments, even her reflexes and endurance were noticeably enhanced.On the other hand, her response to stimuli grew worse rather than better. With her brain processing everything around her at an increased rate, it also processed stimuli to an overwhelming degree. Even the smallest noise became too loud, the slightest touch too painful. She struggled to eat anything because the textures were abhorrent. The stress caused Kit to nearly shut down completely.Kendrick explained that things were likely to get worse before they got better, Kit’s body would have to get used to the enhancements. A few more surgeries were done and tweaks made - so she was told - and eventually things DID become easier. In fact, it felt a lot like a switch flipping in her head. She almost didn’t notice the changes at all.

By the end of the year, Kit had made excellent progress and the Equilibrium project was a success. For Kit, success meant there were no more surgeries, no more machines working on her day and night. No more overstimulation, no more anxiety, no more depression. No more anything.Kit didn’t realize when everything became orders in her head, a compulsion of tasks to follow - like a machine. Each day seemed to disappear and the passage of time became hazy. She remembered bits and pieces, orders to remind her to eat and sleep and wake. But the hours in between were fragmented, faint images of places and people but nothing else.Meanwhile, Obsidian celebrated Kendrick’s success with his prototype and began forming plans to use Subject 000 as the blueprint for more operatives - to ensure a better survival rate. Obsidian continued to use their Subject 000 as a bounty hunter and assassin while simultaneously returning to their experiments. This time instead of making changes - they wanted to see what made their Subject tick. What made her successful?It all came to a halt when a hacker managed to infiltrate Obsidian’s database. Information was filtered to an unknown source, but more importantly Kit experienced an unexpected terror as her own body fell prey to the attack. Thankfully for her, the hacker was an ally. In fact, the main purpose of their attack had been to disrupt the tech manipulating Kit. The hacker begged her to escape while she had the chance.The weakened defenses allowed Kit to get a look at the true nature of the Equilibrium project. Everything from the very beginning. From the school to the tortuous experiments they had put her through and the crimes she had been forced to commit. Horrified and angry, Kit used the very enhancements and training she’d been armed with to attack them. She copied every file on the project before destroying the entire database with the help of her mysterious savior.Afterwards, Kit set off multiple explosives in an attempt to destroy the Obsidian compound and disappeared into the night. Obsidian continues to hunt her relentlessly in the hopes of gaining back their stolen research, but they are not the only ones - other organizations also seem to be interested in finding her. Kit herself manages to stay a few steps ahead while slowly becoming accustomed to the outside world.
